About Freedom and Life Counseling

Helping Restore Freedom and Life Since 2003.

Freedom and Life Counseling began operations in 2003 with a mission to help people find exactly what’s in the name: Freedom and Life.  The name itself is based on two verses from the Bible:

Galatians 5:1: “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”

and

John 10:10: The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

About Us

Our Mission

We believe that everyone has a story of wounding that has kept them from experiencing these two crucial promises God makes.  It’s through the application of mental health counseling and spiritual tools and gifts that we enable others to find freedom and life.  We must be clear though: Only Jesus can free and heal a person’s life.  We consider ourselves the “middle men (or women)” in this process.  It’s too easy for ministers and counselors alike to see themselves as the healer, and we remain vigilant against this pride on our own lives.  We want to be the tools ourselves that God uses, and our individual walks with God reflect that desire.  It’s vitally important that our “inside matches our outside” and we live what we preach, so to speak.

In our effort to live out our callings with His Spirit, we have each individually been led to professional counseling.  While it is not uncommon to find spiritually-minded Christians who distrust or even outright reject clinical psychology, we prefer not to enter into that debate.  Instead we walk with God as He leads, and He has lead us to degrees, programs, and experience as professional counselors.  Within that career, we frequently evaluate therapies and psychological research in light of God’s vision.  Some of those secular efforts we leave alone, and others we find have applicable value.  We do our best to let God lead this process.

Spiritually, we believe the Bible can be trusted, and that includes the gifting of the Holy Spirit.  We could share many hundreds of stories of the Holy Spirit showing up in a counseling session to provide insight, revelation, and direct healing.  But we actually do not want to be known by our gifts.  We prefer to be known by our fruit in the lives of those we reach.  One thing is clear: If we allow God to do all He has promised to do, He shows up to do just that.  We consider the development of spiritual gifting to be just as important, if not more so, than developing clinical tools.

He holds a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Liberty University and Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health from Colorado Christian University.  His approach is rooted in Jesus’ promise to “heal the brokenhearted and set the captives free.”  His passion is connecting clinical with spiritual in order to help clients find breakthrough, often in areas where it has been elusive.  Prior to forming Freedom and Life Counseling, Josh had a private practice in Colorado Springs.  He also served with several counseling groups and ministries over the years that offered counseling retreats, teaching programs, and clinical training. Josh’s counseling approach is influenced by the work of John Eldredge, Larry Crabb, and Dan Allender. He lives in Buena Vista with his wife of 16 years and their three children.

Brian Magee

Brian is an LPCC in Colorado and holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health from Colorado Christian University.  Before coming to Freedom and Life Counseling, he worked at Light of the Rockies in For Collins, Colorado, Vail Relationship Institute, and Trailhead Christian Counseling in the Roaring Fork Valley.  He has a passion for helping people with depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, marital challenges, relational challenges, and the normal struggles of everyday life. He has also served as an Elder in his church.  Brian strongly believes in the power and importance of the therapeutic relationship between counselor and counselee.  He also strongly believes in the power of God to transform our minds through the use of Cognitive Behavior Therapy.  We are made in His image and He has great plans for us to work all things for our good and to develop us into people of character.  God has equipped us and our world for just what we need, and the power of counseling in nature has healing.
